down the road is a fork,
a bend in the tracks,
ice on the road yet to thaw,
a hill whose grade is underestimated,
an unexpected current in the river,
and someday we’ll need to decide
whether to go left or right,
how much we should slow down,
which patches of black are best avoided,
when to call it quits and drop a gear,
and whether to head to shore
or simply go with the flow.
But that doesn’t have to be today.
Today the roads and tracks are sure,
the sun bright and tall,
the hill yet a thought,
and the current is happy
to simply carry us along
while we are more than happy
to simply enjoy the ride.
