Leave it to chance

Would that we could
trust fortune to chance
and chance to time;
Since the beginning
we’ve been marching
toward an end,
but time is fickle
and the missteps
set the pace, not
the metronome with
its heartbeat steady
and enticing but ever
just beyond our reach.
Would that we could
trust misfortune to change
and change to progress;
After the end we’ll find
the unknown, a sea
of muted colors, but
eyes can be deceiving,
and who can know
the spectrum of light
we’ll chance upon
there in the darkness.
