What the mask said

What the mask said

There’s oil in the water from
the start, too much to see
the mask for what it is,
a simple martyr, or
perhaps an excuse
with a subtle point,
the message fear and its kin,
what’s done being done and
impossible to be undone,
stillness more overwhelming
than the weight of silence
in a summer night
or the anticipation of dreams.
The majesty of a tree’s reach
will forever be prey
to time and the shears,
whether a clock’s hands
are understood or not.
How many times must we trip
before we learn
to tie tighter knots?
