Knowing when

Will we know you then,
when the path you walk
is only wide enough for one,
when the sentinel limbs above
no longer block passing storms
but only work to usher you on?
Will we know you still,
when the wandering breeze
washes us into the shallows,
when the tide’s hungry pull
beckons you ever further
out to the waiting sea?
Will our journey together
end there on the shoreline,
reminiscent and proud
in your fading wake?
