You won’t go willing,
but still they watch
your every move
like shipwrights
analysing every seam
and plank in the hull.
You won’t smile,
but inside they’re laughing,
patient for the day
you’ll come running
face aglow and vivid
with youthful abandon.
You won’t remember,
but your shy looks
were ever greeted
with a thick kindness
and sometimes just a hint
of wandering anxiety
for the sticky pace
of time and familiarity.
