There’s always yesterday

When you come to be
so engulfed by the distant chorus
of children your own age at play
that the fear of being left behind
no longer holds any weight or water
and I’m left a silent statue in the periphery,
at least I’ll know that yesterday
you came to me with arms open and tears a flame
as some unknown clamor rude and unwelcome
broke the silence behind you so suddenly,
when turning gallantly to face the foe
was a thought that never found spark,
when in the face of all the fear in the world
you still found solace in my embrace.
