Just us two

We breathed in the setting sun just us two,
painted the air with smiles and cries and sighs,
the scent of mom still fresh in the hallways,
Don’t worry, she’ll be back, just a night out,
but the scent enhanced the pain of your teething,
just as powerful as the pain of my helplessness,
and as darkness floated in on just the two of us,
we said goodbye to today and all that we met,
emptied our heads to make room for tomorrow,
and slept adrift in each other’s auras, just us two,
waiting secretly for just us two to become just us three.
