If faith were that simple

Sometimes I wish I were religious,
to have someone to thank
when fortune comes bearing
her fruits sweet and ripe and aplenty
in gold-laced baskets overfilling,
or to blame when underneath
every succulent invitation awaits
a poxy, mold-ridden morsel
weary and as pungent as carrion,
spoiling any forlorn hope of appetite.
