Readying to fly

It truly is as dangerous as Bilbo says, stepping out your door,
but there’s only so much to learn sheltered and afraid of
the world as wide as thought and twice as deep as sleeping.
From your father’s mountain hometown you may get to see
to the dockside cities just off the hill from home and hearth
to the myriad walkways and benches where friends and family
rest while pondering the race and where in the pack they stand.
We each have our own shoes and paths to choose and amend,
and every time we rest a playground won’t be far off,
a faithful reminder of the generations coming along behind,
stretching restless wings full of fresh feathers and anxious flight.
